What three power-meter obsessives taught me about actually going faster


The Belief I Walked In With

I own several heart rate straps, two of which have never been recharged, and a stroke coach I bought specifically to win arguments with my training partner and myself. I am, in other words, exactly the customer a power meter is built for: a man who trusts a number on a screen more readily than his own two eyes.

So when one finally turned up on my own boat, I did what any self-respecting gadget obsessive does with a new number. I decided it was a leaderboard. Bigger figure, better rower, simple as that. Strap it on, find out who’s actually pulling their weight, sort the crew accordingly. I was confident about this in the specific way people are confident right before they turn out to be completely wrong.

Then I spent an hour each with Noel Donaldson, who has coached Olympic gold medallists in two different countries and currently runs a school program with a bigger budget than most national federations; with Dick and Pete from Wallingford, two Head of the Charles winners who bought their own gear after getting beaten at Henley Masters and decided to fix it themselves; and with Greg Benning, winner of a record 28 Head of the Charles titles, who didn’t just use a power meter — he sat in the room with Valery Kleshnev and Nielsen-Kellerman and helped whiteboard the thing that became the NK Empower.

Three completely different relationships with the sport — Olympic coach, uncoached club four, obsessive masters solo scholar — and every one of them ended up somewhere close to the same place. The number on the screen is close to useless on its own. What it’s attached to is the whole game.

In Brief

Before the play-by-play — the short version, for anyone who wants the substance without three hours of interviews. Bookmark it, read the story whenever.

  • The core discovery: going faster at a higher rating doesn’t mean pulling harder. Wallingford’s crew found their force per stroke barely changes between rating 20 and rating 34 — 90% of the extra boat speed comes from spending less time on the recovery, not from bigger pulls. Nobody’s coach ever told them to slide slower.
  • Rig first, judge later. All three conversations converge on the same order of operations: use the arc sensor to get everyone’s catch and finish angles consistent (roughly 68–70° catch, 40–42° finish is the elite benchmark, achievable at masters level with decent hip flexibility), then and only then start looking at power.
  • Bow rows less than stroke, and that’s normal. There’s a real, repeatable effect — Wallingford saw the same rower produce ~10% more power in seat 3 than in the bow. Nobody’s fully explained why. Boat pitch and how much of the “falling deck of cards” effect (Noel Donaldson’s phrase) each seat absorbs are the leading theories.
  • Power ≠ work ≠ force, and mixing them up is the single most common way people misread their own data. Force is what’s on the oar right now. Work is force applied over the distance of one stroke. Power is work per stroke multiplied by strokes per minute. Rating games power without changing work.
  • The data can wreck a crew’s head faster than it helps their boat. Every guest, independently, raised the same warning: power meters are diagnostic tools, not selection weapons. The best crews (the Kiwi pair, most notably) only looked at the numbers when they felt like they were rowing well, using it to reinforce the feeling rather than autopsy every bad outing.
  • Verdict from all three: yes, it makes you faster — but the gains come almost entirely from what you do in training between sessions, not from staring at the screen mid-race.

Setting Up the Boat: Angles Before Anything

Every guest, unprompted, described the same first move: don’t look at power until the rig is right.

Noel’s version, from decades of AIS and Victorian Institute of Sport work: get the boat set so everyone is rowing the same angle, same forward reach, same finish position, and check that the timing lines up, before you let yourself get distracted by anything else. “I can’t help myself once I’ve actually done that,” he said — the moment the angles are sorted, he’s straight into hunting for anomalies in power distribution across the boat. His caution is that effective length and slip numbers are seductive and easy to over-read: most systems will show some slip at both ends, it’s almost impossible to get to zero, and chasing it can become “a really big focus” on something that isn’t actually costing you boat speed.
